Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is sweet in taste and is poisonous to your pet. Even a tablespoon of the liquid can be toxic or fatal to a small dog. It progresses in three stages. First symptoms can appear within 30 minutes, and involve an appearance of drunken behavior with stumbling, staggering, vomiting, extreme thirst and frequent urination. It can cause permanent kidney damage and death. If you observe your pet licking anitfreeze get him/her to your vet immediately. If you cannot get your pet to a vet right away you can induce vomiting. In order to induce vomiting, the animal must be fully conscious, breathing without difficulty and free of seizures. Feed the dog blackened toast: This will help neutralize some of the toxins, while also absorbing some of the poison. It’s much easier to induce vomiting when there is substance present in the stomach. Achieving emesis in a dog with only fluids in the stomach is more difficult. The Benefits of Spaying your dog early

The chance of your dog developing mammary cancer if you get her spayed before her first heat is 0.05%. This is a very low number. If you wait until after her first heat this number jumps to 8%. If you wait till her second heat it jumps to 26%. This is very significant. Unless you are planning on having a litter then my strong suggestion is to get your female dog spayed at 4-6 months. Rattlesnakes are out!

It's rattlesnake season here in San Clemente. Just a warning to keep an eye out for them on the trails on the beach or up in the hills as they like to sun. There is a rattlesnake vaccine that I recommend. THIS DOES NOT MAKE YOUR PET IMMUNE TO THE BITE, but does boost the immune system to combat the venom and buys your pet some time. I had an interesting appointment in Laguna Beach, CA yesterday. It was a physical therapy session for a Min Schnauzer that has a lower lumbar bulging disc & is having problems getting up the hundreds of stairs they have at their home. I consulted with the owner and through the vet's instructions I attempted to perform some ROM (range of motion) P/T. Although the dog was territorial at first, I did get him to be compliant with patience and a muzzle. We did some ROM standing up and it was quite successful. This leads me to the reason for my post. I am looking for more medical oriented clientele in Laguna Beach and wanted to post that information. My goal is to make this doggie's life a little less painful...

Cocoa mulch can be deadly to dogs

As spring approaches, people will start to tend their lawns and gardens. Many will consider using cocoa bean mulch as a fertilizer. Made from spent cocoa beans used in chocolate production, cocoa bean mulch is organic, deters slugs and snails, and gives a garden an appealing chocolate smell. However, it also attracts dogs, which can easily be poisoned by eating the mulch.
Cocoa beans contain the stimulants caffeine and theobromine. Dogs are highly sensitive to these chemicals, called methylxanthines. In dogs, low doses of methylxanthine can cause mild gastrointestinal upset (vomiting, diarrhea, and/or abdominal pain); higher doses can cause rapid heart rate, muscle tremors, seizures, and death.
Eaten by a 50-pound dog, about 2 ounces of cocoa bean mulch may cause gastrointestinal upset; about 4.5 ounces, increased heart rate; about 5.3 ounces, seizures; and over 9 ounces, death. (In contrast, a 50-pound dog can eat up to about 7.5 ounces of milk chocolate without gastrointestinal upset and up to about a pound of milk chocolate without increased heart rate.)
If you suspect that your dog has eaten cocoa bean mulch, immediately contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (1-888-426-4435). Treatment will depend on how much cocoa bean mulch your dog has eaten, when the mulch was eaten, and whether your dog is sick. Recommended care may include placing your dog under veterinary observation, inducing vomiting, and/or controlling a rapid heart beat or seizures.

Avoid feeding chocolate to your cat or especially your dog. Even in relatively small amounts chocolate is poison to cats and dogs. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, two different types of stimulants that affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle, as well as increasing the frequency of urination. If the animal was to eat a larger quantity of chocolate he may become very sick and develop vomiting or diarrhea. When the amount of chocolate eaten is excessive, symptoms can include restlessness, hyperactivity, muscle twitching, increased urination and/or excessive panting. White chocolate has the least amount of stimulants and baking chocolate or cocoa beans have the highest. A better idea is to buy chocolate drops which are made specifically for pets, as they will not harm your pets' teeth or cookies made with carob chips specifically for pets.

Recently one of my networking members from Talega, San Clemente called me worried about his cat. He was lethargic and had fasciculations. With no poisons around and the cat in good health I quickly asked if the cat could have been chewing on cut flowers or a plant. Turns out the cat had been chewing on some new flowers on the table. Fortunately the cat ended up getting through the process without having to visit the Vet, but many times it is necessary to make a visit. There is a long list of plants and flowers that are toxic to pets. You can visit the internet or local book store to find a comprehensive list.
